The slip knot is the first step in learning how to knit.

It may seem silly to devote a whole page to making a slip knot, but you would be surprised at how many people have never made one.

This knot attaches your yarn to your needle and creates the first stitch.

Here is how you make one:

Pull 8" to 10" of yarn loose from your ball (skein). Hold the tail end of the yarn in your left hand. With your right hand wrap the string clockwise around your forefinger and middle finger.

With your right hand pull a loop of the ball end of yarn through the loop around your fingers.

Still holding the loop with your right hand pull your left fingers free from the yarn, grasp the loose tail end of the yarn and gently pull until a knot forms at the base of the loop.
Slide your needle through the loop, pull on the tail and ball ends until the loop tightens around the needle. This is your first stitch. Congratulations! Now go on to learn how to cast on.
