Casting on to knit

After you have mastered the slipknot learning casting on is the next step in knitting. It is the anchor row for everything that comes after. Every pattern will start with a set number of stitches, depending on the size of needle, yarn, gauge and finished object you are making. Let's get started.

To begin hold the needle with the slipknot in your right hand, wind the TAIL END around your LEFT THUMB. Wrap the yarn from the ball around your LEFT INDEX FINGER. Hold both yarn ends in your palm.

Insert the needle in your right hand upward under the loop on your left thumb, then over and behind the loop on your index finger.

Use the tip of the needle to pull the yarn up from the ball through the loop to form a stitch.

Pull your thumb out of the loop and pull the tail end of yarn to tighten up the stitch on the needle. Yippee!! You have just mastered the second step in knitting! Repeat these steps until you have the desired number of stitches on your needle. You are now ready to learn the knit stitch!
